We should target a publication in Geoscientific Model Development that demonstrates the V&V capability.

   • PFLOTRAN
   • TDycore: MFE and MPFA-O
   • VSFM [which is now part of MPP lib]

2. Possible verification problems:

   • Infiltration in a 1D layered soil column (Figure 2 of Bisht et al. (2018))
   • Few examples of MMS problems: Bisht and Riley, 2019
   • Comparison against Celia et al. (1990) data of infiltration within a dry column.

3. Possible validation problems:

   • Comparison against Celia et al. (1980) data of infiltration within a dry column.
   • Comparison against Vauclin et al. (1979) experiment of two-dimensional transient variably saturated water table recharge.

4. Possible grids:

   • Orthogonal
   • Non-orthogonal

5. Serial vs Parallel run (impact of preconditioner?)

This Celia paper is 1990 and I don't see experimental data (not validation?), though it's a good test problem for conservative time integration.
