i'm trying to build pango too. it needs a backend. and even though i specify CairoBuilder as a dependency, i get:

checking for CAIRO... no
configure: error: *** Could not enable any backends.
*** Must have at least one backend to build Pango.

I'd like to have a try at building Pango in the next days. How far did you get?
