Lab 3. Wizard Lab

Integrating classification into a larger interaction can be challenging. Very often, we get focused on the recognition, and lose sight of the larger context in which we'd like to use the recognition. It's a good idea to prototype interactions in advance so that we have a good feeling for what it is we'd like to design.

Find a partner. (This is just for this lab.) Set up a 1:1 conversation using Discord.

Ideation

Copy the template for the Interaction Design Tool, and work through the tool for a few different ideas.

Even if you have an idea of what you'd like to senses, working through the tool helps you think through the larger context. For instance, what information does the user need to have going in? What are situations where you want to prevent or override the intended action?

Embodied Design Improvisation

After you figure out what you'd like to sense and what you'd like to do in response, try to work through interaction. Where possible, have one person go to the site of the intended interaction, and walk through the steps as the user.

The other person plays the part of the computer: what can the machine listen for? how should the machine react? Are there short-cuts? It is fine to play sounds, talk or put things on the Discord screen using paper and pen.

Design Documentation

Write out, using a flow chart, storyboard or script, your choice, how you would like the interaction to go.

Bonus points if you can make a little video prototype!
