Proposal 1:

reduce the height of collapsed message and hide the rest of div (IMO this is not OK for several mails like bills, promotions etc.)

Proposal 2:

if a message is marked as read, display the excerpt only
else standard display

Add an action button on the discussion: «Expand/Collapse messages»
The collapse function does not collapse unread messages.

Add an action button on each message: «Expand/Collapse»
the read status has no impacts

So each type of message (twitter/mail/…) should have a collapsed mode.

We need a UI for collapsed messages.

about the next card (handling multipart), each textual multipart can be collapsed too according to read status

Proposal 1 seems not OK, proposal 2 could be boring when importing (from external account) a very long "unread" conversation (no collapse would occur).

I made proposal 1 looking bad 'cause it's not mine 😈

seriously, it could be quick 'n dirty but fine enough … but, well, I think we can do better w/ 2nd proposal

About the problem of long discussions, it might not be a pbm and there are solutions:

  • imap could mark as read when importing mails
  • the button «collapse all» would be always visible
  • we can should add a button «mark as read» for the discussion

ok go for it (with a button «mark as read» for the discussion) :)

Imap is not the only protocol, and twitter importation won't fold when importing. Unless twitter has a similar flag ?
