Can management of user settings be more consistent? #149

Seems that the decisions of when to save & restore user settings is not consistent. Suggest we add a could methods (saveUserSettings(), restoreUserSettings()) to make this more consistent. Is this possible?

Not necessary for first release. Definitely, this should be on the expected feature list.
