I've decided to go with a resizable split design where one split pane contains a Menu that should only be visible if it has more than one entry, and otherwise stay zero-sized/invisible. While I can manually drag the split border so that it aligns with the outer border, I cannot figure out how to start that way.
Here's an example: https://asciinema.org/a/LuTCo9XT26h4pwlhdRCvgYPEk. Take a look at the very beginning. You'll see two borders next to each other. Only after I drag it right and then all the way to the left, I can hide the border. But I want the split border to be hidden from the get go.
